A lead magnet is a small piece of value — typically a PDF, checklist, template, or trial — offered in exchange for a visitor's email address and sometimes phone number. It's the most common way B2B companies build a marketing list, and increasingly it's used in e-commerce too (discount codes, buyer's guides).

The economics: every email in your list is worth $X over their lifetime. A well-designed lead magnet can collect emails at 15–35% conversion rate — far higher than trying to make the sale directly.

The 8 types that work

From highest to lowest effort, roughly:

1. Template — a spreadsheet or doc people can use right now (cash flow template, email sequence template)
2. Checklist — 1-page, actionable, printable
3. Cheat sheet — condensed reference, often visual
4. Ebook / guide — 20–50 pages (higher effort, lower perceived value in 2026)
5. Webinar / workshop — scheduled, includes time commitment
6. Free trial — the product itself, limited time or features
7. Quiz / assessment — interactive, ends with a personalized result
8. Tool / calculator — ROI calc, pricing estimator, domain checker

What makes a lead magnet actually convert

Three tests for any lead magnet:

1. Specific outcome — "How to get your first 100 customers" beats "Marketing tips". Narrower = better.
2. Instant payoff — they should be able to use it in 10 minutes, not study it for a weekend.
3. Proof by title — the name tells them what they'll get, with no jargon.

Ebooks are losing ground in 2026 because everyone is tired of 30-page PDFs they won't read. Templates and tools win because you use them once and feel smart.
