What makes a meta description work

The meta description is the gray paragraph that appears under your page's title in Google search results. It doesn't directly affect ranking — Google has confirmed this many times — but it's the single biggest lever on your click-through rate (CTR) from search.

Two pages ranking at the same position can get wildly different traffic depending on their meta description. The one with a specific, outcome-focused description wins most of the clicks. The other gets ignored.

The three rules

  1. Match search intent, not your brand pitch. The person typed a query into Google. Your meta description should mirror that query and promise an answer.
  2. Lead with the outcome, not the feature."Create landing pages in 2 minutes" beats "A modern landing page platform built with Next.js."
  3. Use the full character budget.Google truncates at around 160 characters. Aim for 140–155 to be safe across devices. Don't stop at 80 — that's wasted real estate.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Leaving it blank. Google will guess from your page content — sometimes fine, often terrible.
  • Keyword stuffing.Repeating "landing page builder" five times looks spammy and hurts CTR.
  • Writing for every audience at once. A generic description wins no clicks. Pick one audience, one outcome.
  • Missing the verb."The best landing page builder on the market" is passive. "Build a landing page in 2 minutes" is active.
