UTM parameter cheat sheet

utm_source (required)
The platform sending traffic. Examples: facebook, google, newsletter, linkedin.
utm_medium (required)
The type of traffic. Examples: cpc (paid), email, social, referral, organic.
utm_campaign (required)
The campaign name. Use consistent naming so Google Analytics groups related traffic. Examples: spring_launch, black_friday_2026.
utm_term (optional)
For paid search, the keyword. Example: running_shoes.
utm_content (optional)
Distinguishes similar ads pointing to the same URL. Examples: hero_cta, footer_link, blue_button.
Pro tip: Never UTM-tag internal links (like navigation clicks between your own pages). It overwrites the original source and breaks attribution. Only UTM-tag inbound traffic from external campaigns.
